How many Americans are single?

Pew Research Center surveys find that about 3 in 10 U.S. adults are single, meaning not married, living with a partner or in a committed relationship. The Census Bureau counts more unmarried adults, because it includes people who are dating or living together.

Single men vs. single women

In a 2022 Pew survey, 63% of men aged 18 to 29 said they were single, compared with 34% of women the same age. One reason: young women are more likely to date older men. The gap narrows with age.

Are singles looking?

Not all of them. Pew found that fewer than half of single adults are looking for a relationship or dates. Many say they're happy single or focused on other things.
